Roscommon girls secondary school announces move to co-ed status

Meánscoil Muire gan Smál, Convent of Mercy, Roscommon Town.

The Convent of Mercy secondary school in Roscommon, which has been educating girls for almost 100 years, has announced it will be moving to co-educational status from September 2025.

In a brief statement issued to the Roscommon Herald, the school confirmed that it will be enrolling boys for the first time.

"As of September 2025, the Convent of Mercy Secondary School Roscommon will accept boys into first year, thus changing the status of the school from all girls to co-educational," said the statement.

In May of last year, the school’s Board of Management confirmed to the Roscommon Herald that its trustees, the Catholic Education An Irish Schools' Trust (CEIST), had given it the go-ahead to explore a move to co-ed status.

“CEIST, the Trustees of Meánscoil Muire gan Smál Roscommon, has approved a request from the school’s Board of Management to engage in consultations with their stakeholders on a possible move, in the future, to coeducation, from all-girls,” the school said last year.

The Convent of Mercy all-girls secondary school was established in September 1929.
