County Roscommon now has two resident MEPS after Ciaran Mullooly claimed the fifth seat for Independent Ireland in the Midlands North West Constituency in the early hours of this morning, Friday.

The last four seats in the 15 county constituency were filled overnight after marathon counting came to an end.

For Fianna Fail Barry Cowen was elected on the 20th count, having received over 26,000 transfers from running mate Lisa Chambers.

Outgoing MEP Maria Walsh (FG) and her running mate Nina Carberry and Ciarán Mullooly of Independent Ireland were subsequently deemed elected without having reached the quota. Their final votes were 100,781; 98, 872 and 88,177 respectively.

Following the count the delighted Ballyleague man said: “We did it. What a team, energy, drive and determination. So proud of our achievement tonight – now home and sleep and back to work.”

Earlier in the evening Castlerea’s Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan topped the poll in the constituency to win a third term as MEP. He received a huge bulk of transfers from Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín after his elimination, which put him over the quota of 113,325.
