Paul Little from Roscommon won the ‘Ireland’s Fittest Farmer’ at this year’s National Ploughing Championships, which took place in Ratheniska, Co Laois this week.
The 31-year-old won a signed rugby ball from Munster and Ireland star Peter O’Mahony.
Contestants competed in ‘hang tough’ competition, in which competitors had to hang from bars with their bare hands for as long as they could.
The competition was was overseen by All-Ireland winning hurling manager and Ireland’s Fittest Family coach Davy Fitzgerald, alongside former Leinster and Irish rugby player Seán O’Brien.
The event was hosted by Zurich Insurance and aimed for farmers to talk about their physical and mental health.
Fitzgerald praised competitors, saying the endurance test is “much harder than it looks.”
He highlighted how important physical activity is towards positive mental health, “No matter what, we will struggle at some point or another. Whether it’s a good walk or just 20 minutes in the gym, sometimes you just can’t do that.”
But I think that your heart level is so important for your mental health,” he said.
