Sadness at passing of former school principal

The late Agnes Carley.

There was considerable sadness in the wider community of Tulsk as news emerged of the passing of Mrs Agnes Carley (nee Nerney), late of Grange, Fourmilehouse.

The deceased was principal of Killina National School for many years where she was an inspiring and visionary leader as well as teacher. The deceased taught generations of local schoolchildren and her vision, energy and dedication to those under her call, left an indelible mark on all of her students.

The late Agnes had a great belief in the wider education of children, whether that was participating in sport, music or other extra-curricular activities.

Following her retirement, the deceased always expressed a great interest in learning of the fortunes of her past pupils and was a most charming and pleasant lady, who was universally liked by everyone who had the privilege of coming into contact with her.

The deceased was also a considerable writer and a regular contributor to the Ireland’s Own magazine.

Predeceased by her husband Paddy, the deceased passed away in the devoted care of staff at Roscommon University Hospital and Roscommon Hospice.

The late Agnes is survived by her children, Ann Marie (Dennigan), Rosaleen (Greene), Bryan, Frances (Franklin), Pio, Regina (Mullaney) and Ronan. She was also an adored grandmother to her 22 grandchildren and dearly loved sister of Marion, John and Rosaleen (O'Leary).

The deceased is also survived by her sons-in-law, Joe, Gary, Peter and Brendan, daughters-in-law Suzie, Unagh and Emer, nephews, nieces, sister-in-law, brother-in-law, relatives, neighbours and friends.

The deceased reposed in Cuan Mhuire Oratory, adjacent to the Fourmilehouse Community Centre before being removed from her home to St. Brigid's Church, Fourmilehouse where Funeral Mass was concelebrated on Monday followed by burial afterwards in Ballinderry Cemetery.
