Safety issues in Strokestown housing estates queried by councillor

A local councillor has called on Roscommon County Council to ensure that funding is put in place for the repair of public lighting in a number of housing estates in Strokestown.

Cllr Valerie Byrne asked that the funding be put in place for the council’s Assets Management team to repair lighting in the Kildollogue and Vesnoy estates.

She pointed out at a recent meeting of Boyle Municipal District that the problem arose due to a change in ESB Networks regulations.

The Independent councillor told the meeting that “significant and evasive civil engineering works” were needed to rectify the issue, and it would come with a significant cost.

“These works need to be done now as winter is drawing in and it's not safe for people without the proper lighting in place,” she said.

In response to the councillor’s notice of motion on the matter, the council explained that its Assets and Energy Management section was preparing a solution for the public lighting faults in Kildallogue Heights and Vesnoy Estate.

“It is proposed to carry out repairs to the public lighting faults in Kildalloque Heights and Vesnoy Estate early in the New Year,” said the local authority.
