The second phase of the Part 8 Roscommon Town public realm works, comprising the resurfacing and renewal of the existing urban town centre environment, has been submitted for planning approval.

Plans have been lodged to carry out these improvement works as part of the ‘Roscommon Town Centre West’ element of the project.

These works will include the following: public realm and footpath improvement works on St Ciaran's Street; public realm and footpath improvement works at St Ciaran's Park; alterations and improvement to bus set down and car parking adjacent to St Coman's Wood Primary School and the Sacred Heart Church; alteration to the junction of St Ciaran's Street and Convent Road; and the provision of a new controlled and uncontrolled pedestrian crossings along St Ciaran's Street.

A Part 8 development allows for the application of planning permission for projects by local authorities. The process involves a formal application, a public consultation process, a Chief Executive’s report and a final approval by councillors.

These latest works are part of the Roscommon Town “Putting the Spokes Back in the Wheel” project, aimed at making the county town a “more compact, sustainable and people-friendly place”.

This Roscommon Town West Enhancement Scheme is a continuation of the public realm scheme that was granted planning permission at the start of 2024.

The“Putting the Spokes Back in the Wheel” public realm enhancement project is being funded as part of the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF) which was launched by the Government in 2018.
