Funding of €50,000 has been awarded under the Historic Structures Fund for repairs at Clonalis House in Castlerea.

The funding will be used for repairs to the breakfront including slated roof, leaded balcony and windows.

The Clonalis Estate is steeped in over 1,500 years of heritage, home to the O’Conor family, descendants of Ireland’s last High Kings.

Clonalis has a number of self-catering cottages and Clonalis House is open to the public for tours led by guides that bring centuries of Irish history vividly to life.

James Browne, the Minister for Housing Local Government and Heritage ,announced the list of successful projects, including Clonalis House in Castlerea.

“The award of funding under the Historic Structures Fund is a demonstration of our commitment to preserving and enhancing Ireland’s architectural legacy,” said Minister Browne.

The Minister of State for Nature, Heritage and Biodiversity, Christopher O’Sullivan added that “communities across the country know the value of our built heritage, and many of them dedicate their time, passion and expertise to ensuring their protection. I’m proud as Minister for Heritage to be able to support their work through schemes like the Historic Structures Fund.”

The grant scheme operates on a match-funding basis.
