A sinkhole developed on a footpath and cycleway in the county over the weekend.

Yesterday, concerned locals highlighted on the Monksland Discussion Page on Facebook that a sinkhole had appeared at the Cross River at Summerhill/Coláiste Chiaráin. The matter was reported to the council and the sinkhole was cordoned off with barriers.

When contacted by the Herald, the council said that the issue was caused by a burst or ruptured sewer main.

“Irish Water employees are at the scene and are remedying matters. It’s expected the issue will be resolved in the next day or two,” a spokesperson said.
