Site identified for domestic violence refuge
Work is progressing for the development of an eight-unit purpose-built refuge in County Roscommon.
Work is progressing for the development of an eight-unit purpose-built refuge in County Roscommon, with a site identified for the development.
Local TD Claire Kerrane asked the Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan for an update on the issue in the Dáil recently.
In response, the minister said that progress was being made. “Combating all forms of domestic, sexual and gender-based violence (DSGBV), and ensuring that victims and survivors receive the support and care they need are absolute priorities for me and for this Government,” he said.
He said that plans for the purpose-built refuge were ongoing and progressing.
“Cuan has established a local stakeholder group to lead and support the development of the accommodation. This group includes representation from Roscommon Safe Link, Roscommon County Council, Cuan, Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, the Housing Agency and Sonas. I am further advised that site feasibility is being completed on a potential site.”
When contacted, the DSGBV agency, Cuan, said it was unable to disclose the specific location in Roscommon of the potential site.
The spokesperson said County Roscommon is one of the 18 priority locations identified for domestic violence refuge development.
“Plans are progressing to develop an 8-unit purpose-built refuge in County Roscommon,” the spokesperson said. “Cuan and partners had previously identified several sites, where feasibility assessments were conducted, however none of these were deemed viable for refuge development.”
A new site has been identified, and a site feasibility report has been completed.
Roscommon County Council is now moving forward with obtaining a valuation for this site, and Cuan is optimistic that it will fulfil the requirements for a refuge.
“In the meantime, Cuan has collaborated with Roscommon Safe Link to establish two new Safe Homes in Roscommon, which became operational in June 2025,” the spokesperson said.
“Cuan remains committed to supporting Roscommon Safe Link in maintaining their essential services and exploring further opportunities for Safe Home accommodation development.”
