Slow start around the county in presidential election
The election turnout around Roscommon-Galway is slow this morning, in what has been a lacklustre campaign. Independent candidate Catherine Connolly and Fine Gael’s Heather Humphreys are vying to be the country’s 10th president.
Fianna Fáil’s Jim Gavin is also on the ballot paper, although he withdrew earlier this month from the race after it emerged he owed a previous tenant €3,300. His transfers will be distributed to the other candidates.
According to the latest information as of 11.50 a.m., 10.75% of voters in South Roscommon have turned out to cast their ballot, with 11.5% of voters in Boyle already attending polling booths.
In Castlerea, 8.7% of the electorate have voted with a 6.6 % turnout in Ballaghaderreen. Elsewhere, Roscommon Town has seen a turnout of 9.5%.
In Ballinasloe, 9.6% of voters have cast their ballot.
Voting is expected to pick up in the afternoon and evening, and counting will begin in the Hyde tomorrow morning.
There are a total of 124 polling stations in the constituency, and its total electorate for the presidential election is 60,278.
