Tenders sought for new sensory trail in County Roscommon

Roscommon County Council is seeking tenders to design and build a playscape and sensory trail in Mote Park, Roscommon.

According to the information published on the etenders website, the council indicated that it wants the work finished by July 2024. It is envisaged that the work will start in April and take 16 weeks. The playscape and sensory trail must have a minimum shelf life of 10 years with a 1-year guarantee.

The project will comprise two main elements, including a bespoke designed, built and installed accessible play area. This will include a large or ‘hero’ play item to give a “wow factor”, and a number of complementary smaller, accessible play items. The 1km long sensory trail will be made up of three sensory stations. The route of the sensory trail is pre-determined, but it will be up to the contractor to choose the exact locations for the sensory stations.

“This outdoor recreation scheme seeks to dramatically enhance the recreation offering and experience of Mote Park for both the local community and visitors to Roscommon,” the tender document said. 

“Accessibility and providing an inclusive experience for all who use Mote Park is critical to the entire scheme, and of the highest importance to the council and Coillte.” Other elements of the scheme include a new brand for Mote Park and the design and installation of complementary site signage, including welcome signs, and information panels.

“Mote Park is currently owned and managed by Coillte. Roscommon County Council secured the funding for this scheme from the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme, and subsequently commissioned Outscape to deliver the project on their behalf.” The documents also indicate that four sculptures are also planned for the park, although these do not form part of the project.

The maximum budget for the entire scheme is €140,000 including VAT. The deadline for receipt of tenders is February19th 2024.

According to the tender documents, it is anticipated that the project will be categorised as an ‘Exempted Development’ “and therefore is not likely to require planning permission”.
