Three Roscommon companies celebrate wins at Irish food awards

Waldron Family Meats, based in Brideswell in South Roscommon, was among the Roscommon winners.

Three Roscommon food producers won awards at Blas na hÉireann 2024, the Irish food awards which took place recently in Dingle, Co Kerry.

Sponsored by Roscommon LEO, Waldron Family Meats, Oliver Carty & Family and Do Me A Flavour took home awards with Waldron Family Meats awarded ‘Best in County’.

The 17th Blas na hÉireann event, which celebrates the very best of Irish food and drink, took place from Thursday, October 3rd to Saturday, October 5th.

“Roscommon County Council and the Local Enterprise Office Roscommon would like to congratulate all of the businesses recognised through these Blas na hÉireann awards, and to Waldrons Family Meats, who take the title ‘Best in Roscommon’”, said Roscommon Head of Enterprise, Louise Ward.

“An award worthy of this wonderful food producer, at its heart a family business which has grown from strength to strength and continues to expand. Huge congratulations and we are delighted to be associated with the awards again this year.” 

Products from every county in Ireland were entered to win bronze, silver or gold awards in over 170 food and drink categories as well as key awards.

The Brideswell based company took home awards for a range of products: Gold for its maple & mustard baked ham; Silver for its honey baked ham; Best in County Roscommon; Silver for its sweet glazed bacon chop; Bronze for its Wild Honey flavoured bacon chop and Silver for its home cured bacon medallions.

The company also won eight awards at this year’s Great Taste Awards for its products including its dry cured bacon chop in honey glaze; home cured back rashers; Wiltshire ham fillet; Tennessee BBQ glazed bacon chop; Wild Honey flavoured bacon chop; dry cured ham fillet; home cured bacon medallions and its honey glazed baked ham.

Waldron Family Meats has also been shortlisted at this year’s Athlone Chamber of Commerce Awards for Sustainable Impact by an SME.

A company spokesperson said: “This year Waldron Family Meats has achieved Origin Green Status for the first time ensuring we are keeping up to date with sustainability practices.

“We have made significant changes to our business to ensure we are doing our bit for the environment and our local community.”
