Tributes were paid at the monthly meeting of Roscommon County Council today, Monday, following the untimely death of 52-year-old Paolo Roberto, husband of former councillor Orla Leydon.

A minute’s silence was also observed at the meeting in memory of Mr Roberto, who was known locally as Pablo. Councillors expressed their condolences to his wife Orla, daughter Donata and the extended Leyden and Roberto families.

It’s understood that Mr Roberto, who lived Castlecoote, was admitted to hospital on Thursday and passed away unexpectedly early on Sunday morning.

An Italian fishing enthusiast, Mr Roberto ran a very successful business, ‘Gone Fishing Ireland’ which provided a number of services including fishing guides, fishing packages and boat hire. 

Born in Canada, he travelled Europe widely.

Mr Roberto moved to Ireland twenty years ago and found his fishing haven in County Roscommon. He enjoyed fishing the rivers and lakes of the River Suck and River Shannon including Lough Ree.

Mr Roberto is immediately survived by his wife Orla Leydon, a former county councillor; their daughter Donata; his mother Donata; brother Tony; father-in-law Terry and mother-in-law Mary. 

He is predeceased by his father Giuseppe.

Paying tribute, Independent councillor Tom Crosby said Mr Roberto was a respected businessman with a great love of nature and a keen interest in water-related activities.
