Tributes have been paid to Boyle man John Greenan who died peacefully on Monday, surrounded by his loving family, following an illness endured with grace and dignity.

In a tribute Boyle Celtic F.C. extended its deepest condolences to Betty, Shane, Darragh, Niall, the wider Greenan family and all of you who knew Johnny as a friend.

"Known as Johnny to so many, he was a true gentleman and a cherished member of the community.

"Johnny played a massive role in Boyle, not just in soccer but indeed in the town in general.

"A former player, coach and administrator, Johnny gave decades of volunteerism to Boyle Celtic.

"Many players passed through John's hands and graduated to first team level where his belief of hard work and honesty of effort were instilled in each and every player.

"It was also Johnny who pioneered the summer soccer camps via the FAI, and brought football and a lot of fun, to 1000s of kids down the years.

"It wasn't just Boyle Celtic, however. Both Sligo Rovers and the Republic of Ireland national team received unwavering support.

"It was the stories of trips to major tournaments following The Boys in Green with Johnny not afraid to reminiscence about "the good ol' days."

"Time would simply fly by when discussing the latest goings on on the pitch with Johnny."

The late John was pre-deceased by his brother Terry and his parents James and Josephine Greenan.

John is fondly remembered and greatly missed by his beloved wife Betty, his sons Shane, Darragh and Niall, daughters-in-law Anthea, Mary and Kate, his treasured grandchildren Liam, James and Amy, Senan, Kyle and Caelan, Oliver and Sophie, his brothers Eddie and Jimmy, and his sister Margaret.

John will lie in repose in Mahon’s Funeral Home (F52 ND23) from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m, on Wednesday, 8th April.

Thursday, 9th April 2026 The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at St Joseph’s Church, Boyle (F52 TY46) on Thursday, 9th April
with burial will take place in Assylin Cemetery.
