Tributes have been paid to a local man who passed away last week.

Mr Edward (Eddie) Leavy, of Northyard, Scramogue, County Roscommon, and formerly of Main Street, Lanesborough, County Longford, passed away on Sunday September 22nd at Mullingar Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Pre-deceased by his parents James and Bridget, his sister Anne Matthews and brother Fr James, Mr Leavy was the devoted husband of Bridie (née Feeney), beloved father of Enda, Kevin, Eamonn and Deirdre. He will be deeply missed by his grandchildren Molly, Darragh and Aoibhinn, brothers Larry and Pat, sisters Mary McGowan (New Jersey) and Breda O'Loughlin (Kilkenny), his children's spouses and partner, Colette, Christina and David, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.

His Funeral Mass took place on Thursday morning, September 26th, at St Anne's Church, Scramogue, followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.

The organisers of the upcoming ‘Tarmonbarry 3/4 & half marathon, and 8k’ running event expressed their condolences on social media to his friends and family “It is with great sadness that we said goodbye this week to Eddie Leavy, one of the founding members of the Tarmonbarry Road Race, 41 years ago. Eddie was the race director and main organiser for many years before he handed over the baton to Grainne O'Boyle in 2016 after some gentle persuasion and the trade mark twinkle in his eye,” the organisers said.

“Eddie continued to help with the event, including putting out the race markers for the 8k and half marathon, which he had being doing with his good friend Tony Hanly for the last 40 years. Eddie loved the buzz, the positive energy, community spirit and the camaraderie that surrounded our annual event and he got great joy from the continued success of the event. It will be an emotional 41st Tarmonbarry Road Race this year.”

The organisers also highlighted that Mr Leavy did a huge amount of work for St Barrys GFC, the club behind the annual road race, helping to secure funding for the initial work on the community walkway and training pitch.
