Warnings of traffic congestion and delays in Athlone this Saturday as major protest taking place
Michael Fitzmaurice TD and MEP Ciaran Mullooly, representing Independent Ireland, joined Irish farming organisations, in Brussels to protest against the EU-Mercosur trade agreement.
Athlone residents and motorists have been warned to expect serious traffic congestion and delays this Saturday, January 10th due to a major protest being held in the town.
Many residential and industrial areas in the Athlone area will be particularly effected by traffic attending the National Community Protest against the Mercosur Trade deal.
Stewards will be on duty to assist Gardai but all residents in these areas should note delays are expected in the immediate vicinity of TUS International Athletics Arena, Dublin Road (AIT) especially all roads or estates in the proximity of:
- Junction 9 Exit 9 Athlone East : All areas between the TUS entrances and Cornamaddy school on the R916 Cavan/Glasson/Ballymahon routes. Bliary/Fardrum / Garrycastle areas will be heavily impacted by pedestrians and motorists attending the protest in the University between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m..
- Junction 12 Exit 12 N6 Athlone West Roscommon Town to Athlone Road: Traffic will be very heavy via Roscommon town /Knockcroghery/Kiltoom all along the N61 road to Ganley’s roundabout from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m..
- Junction 13 Exit 13 Athlone West / Tuam : Athleague Monksland traffic will be very heavy along the routes from Junction 13 effecting Monksland area/Athleague/North Galway area from 9 a.m. to 4 pm..
Traffic will include large numbers of tractors, lorries, buses and cars travelling from all approach roads into Athlone.
Please follow instructions of stewards and Gardai at all times. Some road closures and diversions may be in operation.
