Ballintubber’s postmistress of 20 years Mary Lennon locks the doors for the final time on Friday.

It was was an emotional day for Ballintubber’s postmistress of 20 years Mary Lennon as she locked the doors of her shop for a final time on Friday afternoon.

It also marked the first time for the best part of a century that the village won’t have a post office.

The local community showed its support for Ms Lennon and her workers, Sharon Maloney and Anne Connolly, as the shop premises was decorated with gifted flowers and cards.

“I’ve been 20 years here in the post office, since June 6th, 2006, and I have a lot of very fond memories and I’ve had great customers," said Mary as she thanked her customers for their loyalty through the years and her staff, Sharon Maloney and Anne Connolly.

In retirement, Ms Lennon looks forward to spending more time in Lanzarote  with her husband Michael.
