Watch: Visit to County Roscommon school ‘lifts spirits’ of presidential candidate

Presidential candidate Catherine Connolly with MEP Luke 'Ming' Flanagan, Deputy Claire Kerrane and Cllr Leah Cull at St. Anne's NS, Castlerea.

A visit to St. Anne’s National School in Castlerea earlier this morning by presidential candidate Catherine Connolly has lifted her spirits, she revealed.

In a message to the votes of County Roscommon Deputy Connolly said that it was “fantastic” to be in Castlerea and she thanked MEP Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan for arranging the visit.

“The music, dance and the confidence of the children captures the spirit of Ireland,” she said.

Asked whether she thought her election to the presidency was a done deal, she remarked that she was a democrat to her fingertips and it was up to the people of Ireland to decide.

Following her visit to the school she visited the nearby shop of the well known Tom Flynn

Earlier in a message to the people, Deputy Connolly urged voters to turn out in large numbers tomorrow, saying that the real power in this election lies not with government or party machines, but with the people themselves.

“This is our chance to show that democracy in Ireland is alive and strong,” Ms Connolly said.

“When people come out to vote, when they make their voices heard, real change becomes possible. That’s what this campaign has been about from day one – giving people their voice back.”

She added that those in power would prefer to see a low turnout - and that every vote cast tomorrow will send a powerful message.

“They’d love nothing more than for people to stay at home, to shrug their shoulders and think their vote won’t make a difference. But it will. Your vote is your power – and the only wasted vote is the one that’s never cast.”
