Widespread sadness as London-based Roscommon nun passes away
Sr. Elizabeth spent seventy years in London but never lost touch with her Roscommon roots, buying the Roscommon Herald ever week.
There was widespread sadness among family, friends and the wider community following the passing of Sr Elizabeth Geraghty, who died peacefully at her home in Ealing, London, on June 23rd, aged 85.
A deeply respected member of her religious community and a proud native of Roscommon, Sr Elizabeth lived a life marked by faith, family devotion, and an enduring connection to her native place of Clooncrim, Ballinlough.
She left her beloved West Roscommom in the mid-1960s, departing from the local train station to begin a new chapter in London. She would go on to spend an extraordinary 70 years living in Ealing, where she became a cherished figure in both religious and community circles.
Sr Elizabeth bought the Roscommon Herald every week in Ealing Broadway, keeping closely connected with the happenings of home. Her love of the county extended to music, and she was especially fond of Roscommon country songs.
Born the eldest of eleven children to the late Michael Geraghty of Clooncrim and the late Margaret Geraghty from Ballyhaunis, she is survived by four sisters and two brothers.
Affectionately known by her wider family as “Auntie Greta”, Sr Elizabeth held a special place in the hearts of her nieces and nephews. Over the decades, she became a guiding presence for many of the younger family members travelling to London, helping them settle in and find summer jobs.
She was a dedicated member of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Resurrection, an order founded in Rome in 1891.
