Works underway on Ballaghaderreen swimming pool
Works have got underway on the swimming pool in Ballaghaderreen, which has been closed for more than a year.
The news was confirmed this morning, Wednesday, by local Sinn Fein Deputy, Claire Kerrane, who was delighted to confirm that works have commenced on the pool located on the Sligo Road.
"This is welcome news given the pool has been closed now for over a year. The owners had initially advised me that works will take two weeks. I have gone back to check this timeline again. However, the good news is the contractor is on site and work is underway at long last,” said Deputy Kerrane.
"The owners have said on the completion of works, the next steps with the operator can be taken. They are still unable to give a reopening date as the operator will have to make arrangements regarding staff and training, which is understandable.
"Now that the works are happening, we can be more assured that the reopening date is getting closer. I know people have missed the pool greatly and I also know people really want to see it re-opened. I will continue to do all I can to make sure this happens.
"I have been in weekly contact with the owners to keep this moving as much as possible, and I will continue to be until the pool is open. This remains a priority for me,” said the Roscommon/Galway Sinn Fein TD.
The swimming pool was part of the original leisure centre at the former Abbeyfield Hotel, which became an EROC centre in 2017. The pool has remained closed since December 2022, partly due to running costs.
