Oran come up short in Connacht final

Anna Hussey produced an all action display.

Despite a battling display, Oran suffered a 0-11 to 1-5 defeat to Ahascragh/Caltra in the Fr. Vincent Lawless Cup (Connacht Intermediate camogie final).

Oran led this contest 1-4 to 0-5 after 33 minutes but from there the mid Roscommon side scored just once more.

The Galway side slotted over six points without reply in the second half as inspirational centre back Sarah Noone grabbed five on the spin. Oran did hit back with a late pointed free from Orla Connolly, but Hazel Kelly saw red late on as Ahascragh/Caltra held on.

The first half was a tense and tight affair with both sides grabbing just a solitary score from play before the interval. Ahascragh/Caltra controlled the midfield exchanges but fired in four wides and dropped the same amount of efforts short as Oran dug in.

Aoibhe Glynn slotted over four placed balls for the winners while two Hazel Kelly frees kept Oran within range.

Ahascragh/Caltra led 0-5 to 0-2 but Andrea Fallon’s long range strike found the net as Oran restored parity.

Colm Kelly’s side started the second half in determined fashion as Kelly (free) and Fallon both slotted over to help Oran lead for the first time in the contest.

However, a Glynn free and five in a row from Noone helped Ahascragh/Caltra prevail.

Oran are set to face Armagh’s Granemore in the All Ireland Junior semi final in two week’s time.
