One of County Roscommon’s great GAA Gaels will be laid to rest on Monday.

Tommy Hoare of Cuilbeg, Rooksey, passed away peacefully on June 8th at home, surrounded by his cherished family.

A former secretary and current president of St. Barry’s GAA Club, Tommy was one of the Tarmonbarry-based club’s most popular and respected officials, always willing to fight his club’s corner, especially at county board meetings alongside Noel Mitchell.

In a tribute, St. Barry’s GAA Club recalled that Tommy was a constant presence around the club and in any work that was to be done around the community.

“Tommy was a mainstay on the St. Barry's Park Committee back in the day, and the excellent facilities in Tarmonbarry today are a testament to Tommy and several others who organised the purchase of the field and collected many a biscuit tin full of money through raffles, draws and functions to pay for it.

“Tommy held many executive positions in the club, including the position of secretary which he held for many years. Tommy represented the club’s interests on many different committees as a county and Northern Board delegate. He was never afraid to speak his mind or to get his point across at meetings.

“While failing health in recent years curtailed his input, he was still to be seen spectating at the games, and he took great pride in seeing any St. Barry's team doing well.”

His daughter Claire paid an emotional tribute to her late father on social media.

“I’m so heartbroken beyond anything I could ever imagine. He’s the greatest man I’ve ever known. He was my superhero. I know he meant so much to so many people. He was not only my father but my role model and they’ll never be a day that goes by I won’t think of him,” she said.

The late Tommy Hoare is survived by his wife Mary, daughter Claire and her partner Lee, his adored grandson Darragh, brothers, sisters, extended family, relatives, great neighbours and a large circle of friends, especially all in St. Barry’s GAA Club.

His funeral cortège will leave his residence on Monday, June 10th, to arrive at the Church of the Sacred Heart, Whitehall, for Mass at 12 noon followed by burial in Kilbarry Cemetery.
