There was a Roscommon connection to the Tipperary side that lifted the Liam MacCarthy Cup on Sunday.

Tipperary goalkeeper Rhys Shelly is a first cousin of Roscommon Town parish priest Fr. Kevin Fallon.

Shelly scored a point from play and saved an injury time penalty from Conor Lehane as Tipperary were crowned All Ireland senior hurling champions for the first time since 2019.

He made his Tipperary debut in 2023 before making his inaugural championship appearance in May of that year against Limerick.

Even though Shelly was Tipperary’s second choice goalkeeper at the start of this year’s Championship, he was given an opportunity in his side’s second round win over Clare before making the number one jersey his own.
