Glynn powers his way to shield success

Winner of the Hollywood Bar Darts Superleague Shield, Gerard Glynn, with runner-up Ken Turkington.
Both the shield and cup finals of the Hollywood Bar sponsored Darts Superleague were played recently. The standard of play on the night was excellent, leading to some outstanding darts throughout with some hard-fought wins.
The shield final was no exception, with the final contested by two in-form players. Ken Turkington defeated Aaron Killane 4-1 in the quarter-finals, before a hard-fought 5-4 semi-final win against Jimmy Owens confirmed his place in the final.
Gerard Glynn was Turkington’s opponent in the decider. Having secured a hard-fought 4-3 win against Martin Fleming in the quarter-finals, Glynn produced some top class darts to edge out James Morris, 5-3, in the last four.
Glynn started the better in the final, as steady scoring (97, 80, 90) made the difference in taking a 1-0 lead. Despite steady darts from Turkington in the second leg, Glynn upped it again, as a score of 125 along with a clinical 110 finish made the difference in establishing a 2-0 lead.
Steady darts followed for both players in the next two legs, but it was the darts at either end that made the difference. Consecutive scores of 136, 99, 78 and 84 at the beginning of the third leg made the difference for Glynn in opening up a 3-0 advantage, while an evenly contested fourth leg was decided by a score of 140 late in the leg to leave Glynn 4-0 to the good.
Steady scoring made the difference for Glynn again in the fifth leg, as scores of 100 and 97 helped him into a 5-0 lead.
Turkington could count himself unlucky not to be on the scoreboard at this stage, but he threw some excellent darts in the sixth leg, as a score of 140 and a clinical 111 finish helped him to reduce Glynn’s lead back to 5-1.
A score of 125 in the seventh leg kept Turkington’s hopes alive, but Glynn was not to be denied. Scores of 81, 95 and 100 made the difference for the Glenamaddy player as he went on to complete a 6-1 win.
Special thanks to all the players who took part, both on the night and across the previous eight weeks. Everyone played their part in helping create such a high standard in the competition. Finally, many thanks to The Hollywood Bar management and staff for their sponsorship of the event as well as the hospitality shown throughout the event.
