Roscommon’s Olivia Costello came up just short in her semi final at the AIG Irish Women’s Close Championship.

The event, which is being hosted by Roscommon Golf Club almost saw a hometown golfer progress through to the final.

However, Costello lost out to Canice Screene (Croham Hurst) by two strokes in their semi final showdown today.

Costello entered this contest in fine form having secured a 3&2 victory over Kate Lanigan in the Last 16 before beating Kate Dillon 5&4 at the quarter final stage. In her semi final, the Roscommon golfer was three up after five holes but her opponent tied the contest by the 13th hole.

Costello won the 14th hole but Screene managed to outdo her opponent on the 16th, 17th and 18th to claim a two stroke victory.

Screene subsequently defeated Emma O’Driscoll (Ballybunion) 2&1 in the final.
