Roscommon Golf Club win Connacht Senior Cup

Roscommon Golf team.
History was made at Roscommon Golf Club on Sunday when the men’s team won the Connacht Senior Cup.
The team defeated Athenry in the final to retain the title they won last year.
Their success 12 months ago bridged a 42 year gap to Roscommon Golf Club’s last Connacht Senior Cup success.
Roscommon Golf Club have now won both major senior men’s titles in 2025 having claimed the Barton Shield title in Ballinasloe last month. This is the first time in the club’s history that this feat has been achieved.
Having qualified on Saturday, Roscommon faced old rivals Ballinasloe in the semi-final on Sunday morning and after a hard battle Roscommon emerged victorious.
The return of Irish international Thomas Higgins was a major boost to the team. He had returned overnight from competing in the European Amateur Championships in Sweden to be able to play.
In the final Roscommon faced Athenry and in perfect conditions it was a tremendous tussle. Some of the Golf played in the final was superb with Simon Walker and David Kitt involved in a titanic struggle which went to the 20th hole before the Roscommon man emerged victorious.
The Roscommon player included an albatross in his round when he holed his second shot on the par five11th.
With Thomas Higgins and David Hill in commanding positions and with Cian O’Connor and Alan Hill also playing well, Roscommon swept to a historic victory.
Huge crowds of members and supporters were there to witness the win. Now Roscommon will contest the All Ireland series in both competitions in Douglas in Cork at the end of August.
The team were captained by Enda Daly and he was assisted by Tommy Greally.
The members of the history making team were Thomas Higgins, Simon Walker, Cian O’Connor, Alan Hill, David Hill, Alan Connaughton and Richie Evans.
