Roscommon’s Simon Walker leads the 102nd West of Ireland Championship after completing his opening round.

Walker finished his opening round on level par after overcoming challenging weather at Rosses Point.

The Roscommon man was -2 after the front nine following birdies on the third and fifth holes. He also birdied the 11th and 15th holes while bogeys on hole 10 and 12 and a double bogey on 13 gave Walker a level par start.

The Championship is being held on the Harry Colt designed Championship Course at County Sligo.

The roll of honour for this tournament includes multiple major champions in Rory McIlroy, Pádraig Harrington and Shane Lowry, among others, right up to last year’s winner Keith Egan who will be back to defend his crown.

The top 64 players after the second round will enter the matchplay phase.
