Roscommon golfers Thomas Higgins and Olivia Costello helped Ireland reach European semi finals.

Higgins was part of the Irish team that defeated reigning champions Sweden to reach the semi finals of the European Amateur Team Championships, which is being held in Killarney.

The Men's Irish team battled to a second-place finish in the Stroke Play qualifying and were met with the prospect of dethroning reigning champions Sweden as the Match Play rounds began on Thursday morning.

The foursomes would see both sides sharing the spoil before Ireland took over in the singles.

Matt McClean, Gavin Tiernan and Stuart Grehan secured the wins needed to help Ireland reach their first European Amateur Team Championships semi final since 2014.

Ireland face Denmark today as they aim to move a step closer to winning this title for the first time since 2008.

Olivia Costello played a key role in helping Ireland defeat heavy favourites England to help Ireland progress through to the semi finals of the European Girls’ Team Championship.

She teamed up with Róisín Scanlon to defeat English pair Lauren Crump and Sadie Adams on the 19th hole to bag a crucial point in the foursomes.

Ireland win four out of the five singles games as Costello defeated Annabel Peaford 2&1 to help Ireland set up a semi final showdown with Italy. Costello is competing in the foursomes this morning before the Roscommon golfer plays Giorgia Scortichini at 2.19 p.m. today.
