Roscommon intermediate ladies’ football vice-captain, Ellen Irwin, believes that her side can challenge for an All-Ireland title having come so close to dumping eventual champions, Leitrim, out of last year’s championship.

Leitrim beat Roscommon by 3-13 to 3-11 in Ballinamore, and having watched Leitrim go on and claim ultimate glory, the St. Faithleach’s player has highlighted that there is plenty of confidence in the camp ahead of their opening championship game against Laois in Portlaoise on Sunday.

“We were disappointed looking back on last year. It was a kick of the ball against Leitrim in the quarter-final, who went on to win it. So, you know, we’ve been there or thereabouts for the last couple of years,” said Irwin at the launch of this year’s TG4 All-Ireland Ladies’ Football Championships in Athlone earlier this week.

“But there are lots of learnings to take from it. We’ll be going in with confidence behind us after seeing how close we came last year.

“A lot of girls are back this year and hopefully that experience will get us that little bit further this year,” she said.
