Creggs recruit well-known local and international sportstar for women's rugby team

World boxing champion Lisa O'Rourke togged for the Creggs women's rugby team last weekend.
One of Roscommon's most well-known female sportstars has been recruited by the Creggs women's rugby team.
Lisa O'Rourke swapped the boxing wing and the round ball for the oval ball as Creggs played their first game of the season against OLBC RFC in the Invitational Cup at Creggs on Sunday last. A good defensive performance saw Creggs come out on top, 17-7.
The world light middleweight boxing champion from 2022 has been a familiar face on the Roscommon intermediate ladies' football team, and she marked her appearance in Creggs colours with a second-half try.
Lisa's father Kevin is a former Creggs player. Last season, he managed the club's first team to Connacht J1A League glory.
The game was dominated by defences early on and it wasn’t until just before half time that Creggs attacked from a scrum and Jemima Adams Verling, who was making her first senior start, ran clear to score under the posts. Eabha Dowd converted to leave the half-time score 7-0 in the home team’s favour.
OLBC had the better of the early exchanges of the second half and levelled the match.
However, Creggs never panicked and continued to defend well. When they got an opportunity to attack from a kick from Eabha Dowd, Lisa O’Rourke gathered the ball out wide and stretched her legs, outpacing the defence for a try that put Creggs 12-7 ahead.
OLBC were now finding it hard to get out of their half and, with the last play, Creggs managed to turn over the ball. Captain Susan O’Reilly broke through to score a try, leaving the final score 17-7 Creggs’ favour.
Creggs’ next game in the Invitational Cup will see them play Galwegians.
A special thanks to the boys’ youth coaches Ivor, Ray and Jimmy and the underage boys who stayed around and cooked the BBQ for the players after the game.
