Despite a 2-1 win over Mayo, the Roscommon and District League were knocked out of the Oscar Traynor Cup.

The Roscommon and District League were knocked out of the Oscar Traynor Cup despite a 2-1 win over a fancied Mayo outfit.

Elimination will be a bitter pill to swallow especially as Roscommon will feel they should have had more points on the board. A 2-0 loss to the Galway League and a 0-0 draw against Sligo/Leitrim left them with an uphill battle but yet they almost secured a place in the quarter finals.

With Roscommon enjoying home advantage, they stifled a Mayo side who enjoyed wind advantage in the first half. A Darren Browne header smacking the crossbar for Mayo was the pick of the chances in the opening 45.

The second period saw Roscommon produce their best half of football all season. Rian Carpenter moved Roscommon in front as he swept home a left footed finish after a dangerous free kick into the Mayo box.

Meanwhile, Cian Kelly grabbed his side’s second on 73 minutes after a brilliant individual run on the right culminated in him cutting inside and finding the net.

However, Jason Hunt pulled one back for Mayo with a well struck free kick from outside the box as Roscommon’s brave attempt at progression came up just short.
