Tom Cairney’s wondergoal seals a flourishing finish with Fulham

Fulham gave Marco Silva a victory in what could be his final match in charge as Tom Cairney’s second-half wondergoal helped earn a 2-0 Premier League win over Newcastle at Craven Cottage.
The manager is due to meet with club hierarchy next week having promised he would make a decision after the season had concluded on whether to extend his five-year stay or to depart.
Much could depend on whether as expected Benfica make an offer for him to replace Real Madrid-bound Jose Mourinho. Fulham have offered a three-year extension but having repeatedly declined to commit himself either publicly or in private, it appears increasingly likely Silva has led his side for the last time.
This will have been a fitting second-off. Issa Diop’s header after Kevin’s free-kick hit the bar got the ball rolling, Cairney gave the season a rollicking finale with a lovely strike for the second, but whether Silva stays or goes, Fulham go into the summer with much to reflect upon and regret.
Both teams had already had their ambitions for the campaign frustrated, Newcastle as far back as February when a run of one win in seven effectively ended their Champions League hopes.
For Fulham their season held promise as recently as their most recent home game. Had they beaten Bournemouth on May 9, this result against Newcastle would have been enough for them to finish sixth.
They were beaten 1-0 by one of their main rivals for Europe, and ultimately it is an inability to grind out results consistently that has cost them. Since the turn of 2026 they have won back to back matches in the league just once, and it is this that may ultimately act as a signal for Silva that is is time to go.
An underwhelming first half of few chances was lit up after 19 minutes. Kevin’s 30-yard free-kick flew on a glorious arc and struck the crossbar. With Nick Pope committed to the dive no one in the navy blue of Newcastle reacted quickly enough to prevent Diop taking two steps towards the ball and stooping to nod into the empty goal.
Impudent skill from Oscar Bobb set up Rodrigo Muniz for a header that was angled too close to Pope, the move appreciated by home home fans bathed in sun in west London.
On a rare foray forward by Newcastle, Bernd Leno stood up to block Joe Willock’s low shot as the first half petered out without the visitors mustering anything further to threaten Fulham.
Cairney whizzed one past the foot of the post just after the hour mark then Calvin Bassey shot forward from left-back and drilled one into the arms of Pope.
Cairney came closer still with another thumping effort that beat the goalkeeper but went the wrong side of the post, as Newcastle’s miserable season threatened to end with a whimper.
For Fulham, they gave their fans a final moment of joy to remember the campaign, Cairney whipping a brilliant curling effort from 25 yards into the top corner to seal it.
