The biggest fish ever caught in Ireland has been landed off the coast of Donegal.

Aoife McGettigan caught a bluefin tuna, weighing 760 pounds (344kg), which she battled with for more than an hour to bring alongside the boat and have measured.

She was on a visit home in Killybegs from Australia and went out with Killybegs Fishing Trips. Her brother Declan was the skipper of the boat.

In a post on Facebook, Declan said: "A day to remember for us, we have just gone and broke the record here on the Fiona tee, we have caught the biggest tuna ever on our boat, a butter ball at 760lb, and to make it extra special it was my baby sister that's home from Australia that caught it."

He went on to say that Aoife had to "battle" to get the fish alongside the boat and she put up a "brilliant fight" to secure the biggest tuna he had ever seen.
