Class Act: Marist College, Athlone

Second Year students engaged in a sustainable engineering workshop.
Sixth Year LCVP The Sixth Year LCVP students travelled to the Chocolate Garden of Ireland, in Carlow last week. They learned all about the process of chocolate making during their visit. They also heard from key business figures and what it is like to run a family-owned Irish business in the current economic climate. Students even got the opportunity to make their own chocolate souvenirs. A great learning experience and thanks to Ms Cleary and Ms Heffernan for organising this trip.

Second Year graphics students attended a very interesting workshop all about sustainable engineering. This workshop allowed for lots of cross-curricular learning for students, involving graphics, science, and geography. During the workshop students examined the engineering process and explored sustainable engineering, looking at real life examples in action. Students were hands-on with numerous interactive activities and got competitive with their final engineering design challenge. Thanks to Mr Hardiman for organising this event. Thanks to Athlone Library for hosting students and to the Rediscovery Centre for facilitating this engaging workshop for students.

The Marist Leaders recently organised the Hope Shoebox Appeal as part of their Christmas Project. This campaign delivers gifts directly to children impacted by poverty in numerous countries across Africa and Eastern Europe. Our Marist Leaders decided on this project with the aim to bring joy to some of the most vulnerable children, as these shoebox gifts are often the only gifts that many children receive at Christmas. The Marist Leaders incorporated the core Marist Values of ‘In the Way of Mary’ and ‘Family Spirit’ into this fantastic project. The response to this appeal has been huge and thanks to all students and staff across the Marist community for supporting and donating a great number of shoeboxes.
