Local Notes: Art Exhibition, Line Dancing Classes, Set Dancing Classes

‘Bándearg’ (Pink), a new exhibition, featuring five female artists working in Ireland, officially opens in Books At One, Louisburgh, County Mayo, on Saturday, April 18th at 6 p.m. and will run through to May 13th. The exhibition brings together a diverse collective of artists, including Elphin’s Nickie Harrington to explore the colour pink as both a physical material and a complex cultural symbol. Nickie is a visual artist working in bold, hard-edge op art across painting, murals, and public installations. Her work explores colour, movement, and perception, creating vibrant visual experiences that shift and play with the viewer.
The 1916 Rising was commemorated at the IRA county memorial at Shankill on Easter Sunday. A colour party led a parade to the memorial where wreathes were laid at the Roll of Honour tablet. Mr Padraig Cryan, Kilmore, chaired proceedings. A decade of the rosary as Gaeilge was recited by Mr Micheál Hanily and the 1916 Proclamation was read by Mr Tom Flynn. The Roll of Honour was called out by Mr Frank Dowd and a statement from the Republican movement was read by Mr Stephen French. A wreath was laid on behalf of the organising committee by Ms Catherine McManus and Mr Thomas Cull laid a wreath on behalf of the Republican Movement. This year marks the centenary of the foundation of the county Roscommon Easter Commemoration Committee. Every year since 1926, the committee has endeavoured to remember and honour the fallen volunteers and civilians who have died during the troubled years. It was this same committee that was responsible for the erection of the impressive memorial at Shankill.
The death occurred last week, peacefully, at home, in her 93rd year, surrounded by her family, of Mrs Una Nerney (née Duke), Tubbermurray, Elphin. Predeceased by her husband, Rory, parents, Michael and Belinda, sister, Maura Flanagan and brothers, Míceál and Seamus. Una will be very sadly missed and fondly remembered by her loving son, Míceál, daughter-in-law Áine McGrath; sister, Lettie Gormley; cherished grandchildren, Úna, Órla and Mary; carer and good friend Marie King, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends. Following Requiem Mass on Wednesday last in St. Patrick’s Church, Elphin Una was laid to rest in the adjoining Cemetery.
The death occurred last week, peacefully in her 89th year, surrounded by her loving family, of Mrs Elizabeth Nolan (nee Brickell), Springfield, Elphin, and recently Altadore Nursing Home, Glenageary, County Dublin. Predeceased by her husband, Seamus, parents, Patrick and Margaret and brother, Frank. Elizabeth will be sadly missed by her loving sons, John and Kevin; daughter-in-law, Michelle; grandchildren Saoirse and Caoimhe; sister, Colette; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, neighbours and friends. Following Funeral Mass on Monday last in St. Patrick’s Church, Elphin Elizabeth was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.

A huge congratulations to all the talented junior and senior members who represented Elphin CCE so proudly at the Roscommon Fleadh. Your hard work, dedication, and love of traditional music, song, story and dance truly shone through on the day. All are incredibly proud of each and every one of you who took part — whether it was your first Fleadh or one of many, you did the branch proud. A special well done to all those who qualified for the Connacht Fleadh in Mohill this July — all are looking forward to the next stage of the journey. Best of luck to everyone — the future of traditional music is in great hands.

The traditional Irish music sessions are continuing each Tuesday in the Tower Inn at 8.30 p.m. with a great mix of musicians and instruments which combines culture and heritage with an enjoyable night’s entertainment, so whether you are a musician or listener come along to the Tower Inn and support this great event.
The next singers’ night in the Tower Inn will be on Sunday, May 3rd starting at 8.30 p.m.. This is an event that will prove to be worth attending whether you are a singer or listener as all genre of songs will be catered for. If you have not attended any of the singers nights’ in the Tower Inn please come along to get a pleasant welcome and meet new friends TIDY TOWNS The Tidy Towns volunteers meet Saturdays at 10.30 a.m. at the day centre polytunnel. All welcome, even if you can only come now and again for half hour, every little counts.

St. George's Heritage and Visitor Centre, Carrick-on-Shannon is the venue this month for two talks. On this Wednesday, April 15th, award-winning author Julie Parsons will discuss her personal family history (Leitrim/Roscommon links), based on her book "People Like Us". On Wednesday, April 29th, local researcher/historian Margaret Goff will give an illustrated presentation on the Peytons of Rockingham and Castle Cara. Both events at 8 p.m.. The death occurred, at his home, on Tuesday, April 7th, of Mr James (Sonny) Keane, Ballinwing, Carrick-on-Shannon. He is survived by his wife, Alicia (née McTaggart) formerly of Enagh, Croghan, his daughters, sons, extended family, neighbours and friends. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday, April 10th in St. Joseph's Church, Leitrim followed by interment in Drumshanbo new cemetery.
