Local Notes: Big wins for Boyle Musical Society, new public lights installed and pop-up market

Boyle Musical Society picked up two awards at the Association of Irish Musical Societies (AIMS) AIMS Awards at the INEC in Killarney on Saturday night.
Elena Greene won the Best Youth Performance in the AIMS Sullivan category for her portrayal of Brigitta von Trapp, in the production of 'The Sound of Music'.
Anne Kielty, who received her second consecutive nomination in the Best Musical Director category, also for 'The Sound of Music', received the runner-up award.
“This was Elena's first role with Boyle Musical Society, where she played the part of Brigitta von Trapp brilliantly,” said Boyle Musical Society.
“From the very first rehearsal to the moment the curtain closes on the final night, Anne Kielty’s dedication, passion, and talent have brought all of our productions to life and she truly deserves this award for the magic she creates both on stage and off,” added Boyle Musical Society.

As part of refugee week, Boyle Family Resource Centre is organising two events this week. On Wednesday, June 18th at King House there will be a showing of ‘Home’ at 7 p.m.. This tells the story of Zak Moradi. Tickets, €2.00 (booking required) and there will be a post-show talk with Zak. For more information or to book call 071 966 3000. On Thursday, June 19th from 11 a.m. 1 p.m. the Connect Café will hold an event. At 11.30 a.m. Zainab will share her story to help better understand the experience of refugees and how Boyle is now her new home. During the morning people can avail of May’s international baking treats while meeting old friends for a cuppa and making new ones.
The annual church gate collection in aid of the assisted pilgrim section of the diocesan pilgrimage to Lourdes will take place on Saturday, June 21st and Sunday, June 22nd at all churches in County Roscommon. This year 35 assisted pilgrims from the diocese will travel to Lourdes and all monies collected at church gates will be used to help defray the costs of this section of the pilgrimage Please support this very worthy cause.

The Monthly Cafe will take place at Lough Key Forest Park, Boyle on this Wednesday, June 18th from 2 p.m., to 4 p.m., and on July 16th from 2 p., to 4 p.m.. The cafe helps to support people affected by dementia, their families and carers. Contact Teresa Keegan on (087) 7061183 for more information.
Following representations by Keadue Tidy Towns Committee over a number of years, Roscommon County Council has erected 10 new street lights, all LED, along the footpath on the Sligo approach road to Keadue. A special thanks to the county council and local councillors for their support in getting the project completed. A number of people use this footpath to get to Lough Meelagh amenity and the Knockranny Wood Loop Walk.
Keep the date of Saturday, August 9th free as Cootehall village will be having a day of fun that starts in the newly extended Riverside Park with the annual Cootehall barbecue, face painting, ice-cream van, music in the gazebo, basketball competition and dog show. In the evening there will be a barn dance in the Cootehall Bridge Boat House with music by the Raggle Taggle Gypsies.

A pop-up market- selling certified organic produce from Knockvicar Organic Garden and Carigeen Farm, takes place every Thursday from 3-7 p.m. in Crossna Community Centre, Cleen Hall F52 A497.
May Moran’s birthday celebration and charity fundraiser, held in Crossna Community Centre on Sunday, April 27th, was a great success. A total of €6900 was raised and has been divided between Beaumont Hospital Foundation (€2300), St Vincent’s Hospital Foundation (€2300) and Mayo Roscommon Hospice (€2300). A big thank you to all who attended and to all who donated to the charities. Also thank you to all who donated food, who helped before the event as well as inside and outside the centre on the day.
