Local Notes: Congratulations, Run to Anfield, National Heritage Week

Creggs is celebrating the 80th anniversary of the unveiling of the Parnell Monument in the village with a tour to the homeplace of Charles Stewart Parnell, Avondale, County Wicklow on Saturday, August 8th.
The tour is organised by Creggs Rural Development and funding for the event has been supplied by the Heritage Office of Galway County Council. The bus will leave Creggs at 9 a.m. on the morning of Saturday, August 8th and will travel to Avondale, where visitors will receive a tour of the historic house and the forest park and treetop walk.
Chairperson of Creggs Rural Development this week encouraged local people to take part in the tour and said it promises to be a very special event to celebrate the ties between Creggs and Parnell. Charles Stewart Parnell gave his last public speech in Creggs in September 1891 before travelling to England where he died some days later. A monument to Parnell was unveiled in the village in June 1946 to mark the centenary of Parnell’s birth. Creggs continues to celebrate its links to the famous Irish nationalist leader and MP with heritage events such as this tour. Thanks to Galway County Council for providing funding for this event, which promises to be a great day out for all the family. Tickets for the tour are available from O’Roarke’s Spar in Creggs.
Masses will take place at Ballinakill Cemetery on Sunday, August 2nd at 10 a.m.; Kilbegnet Cemetery on Sunday, August 9th at 11.30 a.m. and Kilcolumb Cemetery on Sunday, August 16th at 10 a.m..
Sympathy is extended to Tom Cunningham and Ann Kennedy (Limerick) on the recent death of their aunt, Mrs Nora Quirke, Droylsden, Manchester and formerly of Parkroe, Glenamaddy. Aged 88, she was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Following Requiem Mass at St.Joseph's Chapel, Plymouth Grove West, Manchester the burial took place in Droylsden Cemetery.
Congratulations to Niamh Reilly on her recent graduation from Huddersfield University with a Masters Degree in Pharmacy. She is currently on a registration year in the UK.
Best of luck to Lorraine Cunningham and her son Ethan who will participate in in the Run to Anfield on Saturday, August 1st. Participants will take on a 5K route through Stanley Park and run to the finish line in front of the famous Kop in Anfield Stadium. By taking part participants will be raising funds for the LFC Foundation. Lorraine is doing the run in memory of her late brother Gérard who died unexpectedly on April 30th, 2025.
The annual Cemetery Mass will take place in Kilcroan Cemetery, Ballymoe, on Sunday, August 16th at 3 p.m.. During the Mass, all those buried in the cemetery will be remembered and prayed for. A collection will be held on the day to support the ongoing care and improvement of the cemetery. Funds raised will go towards general cemetery maintenance, the digital mapping project and a new graveyard sign. Your support would be greatly appreciated.
Among the most recent SICAP grant approvals from Galway Rural Development (GRD) was that to Glenamaddy Cemetery Committee, with €1,600 granted for a shed to store the lawn mowers and strimmers being used for maintenance. Through the Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme (SICAP), GRD continues to provide grants in support of the ongoing work of community groups.
A number of groups will be visiting Templetogher during Heritage Week, and then a Heritage Open Day there will be held there on Sunday, August 23rd from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. with the main event at 3 p.m.. It promises to be one of the best Open Days, with many elements of heritage being celebrated. The programme includes Irish music, Irish dancing, songs, poems, excerpts from relevant books etc, and finishing with a well-deserved tribute to someone special. The Heritage Society is now at the busiest time of the season, with major events coming up regularly, particularly during National Heritage Week, August 15th to 23rd, so members are actively continuing with preparations for these occasions.
Congrats to the Galway camogie senior team and management on reaching the All-Ireland final. Galway’s impressive win over Kilkenny means that, once more, they will face old rivals, Cork in the final. Warm congratulations also to the senior footballers and management from the neighbouring county of Mayo on ending the long wait for the return of the Sam Maguire Cup to the county with a superb victory over Kerry in the final.
