The late Monsignor Michael T. Flanagan.

Tributes have been paid following the death of Monsignor Michael T. Flanagan who served as a priest for more than sixty years in the United States.

He died suddenly but peacefully at his home on October 30th in Ardsoran, Killaraght, Boyle surrounded by his family.

Born in Ardsoran on May 31st, 1938, Monsignor Flanagan was a proud son of the parish of Killaraght. Educated locally before continuing his studies in Dublin, Mayo and Waterford, he was ordained to the priesthood on June 12th 1965 in Holy Trinity Cathedral, Waterford.

The following day, he celebrated his First Solemn Mass in St Attracta’s Church, Killaraght, marking the beginning of more than six decades of ministry.

Just weeks after his ordination, Most Reverend Joseph M. Marling, Bishop of Jefferson City, welcomed then Father Flanagan to the United States to serve the Diocese of Jefferson City.

He became a much-loved pastor and spiritual guide, earning the admiration of parishioners and fellow clergy alike. In 2000, his years of devoted service were recognised when Pope St John Paul II conferred on him the title of Monsignor.

Despite spending most of his life in the US, Monsignor Flanagan never lost touch with home. His strong bond with family, friends and the local community remained a constant throughout his life, and he took great pride in his Irish roots.

Earlier this year, he returned permanently to Ireland to spend time with loved ones. He passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family and having recently celebrated Mass.

Among the many paying tribute, the Diocese of Jefferson City, in an online message, said: “Monsignor Flanagan faithfully served the Diocese of Jefferson City and the parish community of Our Lady of Lourdes. He will be remembered with gratitude and affection by his brother priests, parishioners, friends and all those whose lives he touched through his priestly ministry.”

Monsignor Flanagan is predeceased by his parents James and Kate, his sister Rita and brothers, Bernard, William, Seamus and Fr Pádraig (St Patrick's Missionary Society Kiltegan).

He is lovingly remembered by his sister Jane Patricia, brother Francis, sister-in-law Joan, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends along with the Bishop, priests and parishioners in the diocese of Jefferson City and his many friends and relatives in the US.

Following funeral mass on Tuesday, November 3rd. at St. Attracta's Church, Killaraght, he was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.
