Castlerea St. Kevin's GAA Club presented a cheque to Parkinson's Ireland, Roscommon branch, for €3,620 - proceeds from the club’s St. Stephen's Day 5k Walk. Thank you to everyone who donated. A brilliant Castlerea Community School senior boys’ team qualified for yet another All-Ireland final in front of an estimated 200 ecstatic supporters at the Hub on Thursday last. It was anything but easy for Tomas Callaghan’s side, only sealing the 63-54 win against Educate Together from Limerick in the dying minutes. They easily won the second game 52-32 with every player contributing. The final will be played in the famous Neptune Stadium, Cork on February 26th. Their opponents are from Kildare Town, impressive winners of the schools’ cup recently.
Castlerea Cavaliers basketball team have their next home game on Tuesday, February 17th at the Hub versus Sligo All Stars. All support welcome.
The manager and staff of Castlerea Mart extend congratulations to former member of staff ring 2, Seamus Beatty, on winning the Castlerea Celtic 50/50 draw on Saturday, January 31st. Manager Brendan Egan says it could not happen to a better person ,who is a great supporter of all fundraising draws.

The Castlerea Brass and Reed Band would like to extend congratulations to band member Mildred Beirne who put on a great performance at the recent Castlerea Musical Society’s fundraising concert held at Trinity Arts Centre. She was escorted down the packed hall by musical society member Claie Kelly where she performed the brush dance in style wearing her stilettos. She then played a tune on the tin whistle and then joined Terry McGowan and his trad group and rendered a tune on the drums. This was one of the most enjoyable concerts held in the town for some time and Mildred played her part with all the other artists. It was a huge success, and the Musical Society is to be commended for putting on such a fine show.
The death occurred peacefully on January 26th, in the tender care of her devoted family and care givers, of Mrs. Muriel sweeney (nee Coleman), Williamstown Road, Castlerea, and formerly of Rathcoole, Dublin and London. Deceased was a very kind, gentle and jolly person. She was a woman of great faith and had great devotion to Our Lady of Knock. She had a great love for her family and adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She qualified as a midwife in 1983 and was employed in in Dublin and London until her return to Ireland where she spent 27 years in St. Patrick’s Hospital in Castlerea where she was highly thought of by her employers and work colleagues. She loved nothing better that relaxing with a nice hot cup of tea. One of Muriel’s great talents was using her artistic and creative style to design her own jewellery. Muriel’s faith was important to her, and she loved to visit the church for Mass, novenas, and private prayer. She loved the newspapers both national and local, which kept her up to date with local, national and international affairs. She will be sadly missed by her heartbroken family Marion, Karen, Louis, Vanessa, Avril and Damian; her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sons and daughters-in-law, her dear cousin May, cherished and valued friends, colleagues, and all who knew her. Her remains were removed from McDonagh’s Funeral Home on Friday evening to St. Patrick’s Church, Castlerea and following Mass of the Resurrection on Saturday morning celebrated by Fr. John McManus burial took place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Castlerea. Before the final blessing, her granddaughter Edina Fahy read the communion reflection Mother and the eulogy was given by her son-in-law Gerry Fahy. The ceremony was enhanced by the singing and music of Jacqueline Kenny. Mey her gentle soul rest in peace.
The winning bonus ball number in Castlerea Golf Club lotto for February 4th was 46. Winners of this week’s lotto were Sean Creighton, Kelly Anne Casey, Willie Gannon, Sean Duignan, Anne Marie Doyle, and Ray Kerrane. Each receive €100.
The death occurred peacefully on Wednesday, January 28th of Mr Jarlath Fahy, Devlis, Ballyhaunis and formerly of Lavallyroe, Ballyhaunis. He was predeceased by his parents Martin and Mary, brother Fr. Des and infant baby son Kieran. Deceased is father of Dr. Caitríona Henry, Kelly Henry Medical Centre, Castlerea. He was a teacher by profession and was principal of Ballyhaunis Community School for many years before he retired. He was very highly thought of by the staff, students and parents. He had a great interest in sport especially Gaelic football and with many other teachers in the school coached the school teams to win many honours for the school. He was a true Mayo supporter, and he would travel to many venues that Mayo was playing at, always hoping that Sam would come their way. He was also a great servant of his club Ballyhaunis, winning a Mayo county senior championship with them in 1958. He also served the club well as a coach, club officer and loyal supporter. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Ita; sons, Donal (Cratloe, Co. Clare) and Frank (New Zealand),;daughters, Áine (Kilkenny), and Caitríona (Castlerea); eleven grandchildren; brother, Fr. Frank (Ballintubber); sisters-in-law, Ann & Mary; sons-in-law, Kevin & Vincent; daughters-in law, Bríd and Nikki; relatives, friends and neighbours. His remains were removed form Donnellan’s Funeral Home, Ballyhaunis, on Saturday morning to St. Patrick’s Church, Ballyhaunis, and following Funeral Mass burial took place in the local cemetery. May his gentle soul rest in peace.
After over 20 years of ongoing voluntary effort establishing and maintaining defibrillators in the parish, the existing members of the Ballintubber Defibrillator Committee are passing on the torch to new members. The committee will be upgrading defibrillators, continuing maintenance and updating training. The Scór Sinsir county final will again return to Kilmurry Hall on Saturday, March 14th with clubs from all over the county contesting the annual cultural showcase. Scór provides a very inclusive social outlet for GAA members and all Roscommon GAA clubs are encouraged to get involved. Cloonfad United recorded another win over the weekend defeating Kilkerrin United by three goals to one. The goalscorers were Matthew Frain, Andrew Glennon and Michael McGarry who kept his remarkable scoring record going. The B team put in a great performance losing to Lough Harps by two goals to one. The goalscorer for this young team was Marcus Denning.
Well done to Helena Cummins who captained Roscommon in their match against Antrim played on St Croan’s pitch on Sunday. The game ended in a draw. Roscommon’s next match is against Down.
