Local Notes: Joint fundraiser, parade appeal and miners reunion event

Boyle Tidy Towns would like to invite you to an evening of celebration in recognition of the hard work all volunteers have put in over the past year. The fruits of this labour resulted in the town winning its first ever national award, coming second in the Town Centre Special Award. All volunteers welcome to the event in King House on March 2nd at 7 p.m.. Presentations, wine and nibbles on the night.
Boyle and District Angling Club will hold a meeting on Thursday, February 29th at 9 p.m. in the Moylurg to discuss the up and coming Easter Pike Angling Festival. Everyone welcome.

The death occurred on Thursday, February 22nd, peacefully in the care of Sligo University Hospital and the North West Hospice, Sligo of Mrs Ann (Granny) Gilmartin, (nee Rowley) Carrickmore, Boyle and formerly of the Forest Park Hotel and Coventry, UK. She was predeceased by her husband, Michael, her parents, Maria Assumpta and George Rowley and her brothers Eric and Ted. Ann will be sadly missed by her daughter, Maria; sons, John, David, Charles, Michael and Anthony; sisters, Barbara and Margaret; daughters-in-law, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, neighbours, her many carers and friends. Funeral Mass on Monday, in St. Joseph’s Church, Boyle was followed by burial at Assylinn Cemetery.
The Online Lotto was drawn on Sunday, February 25th for €7,600. The numbers drawn were 2, 4, 6 & 10. The Match 3 winners were Frank Kearns, Padraig Battles and Michael Sweeney. The jackpot was not won. The jackpot now stands at €7,700 and will be drawn at the usual time of 9 p.m. on Sunday, March 3rd.
After the successful car draw Boyle GAA and Boyle Celtic are coming together for another fundraiser - a white collar boxing event taking place on May 4th. It promises to be a really entertaining night.

Entry is free for all participants Following on from last year successful parade, the viewing stand will remain on the Crescent and there will be a DJ playing before and after the parade The big success of the parade last year was the inclusion of Music Generation and all the local young people who played after the parade. This year Music Generation will play music at the rear of An Rioga (former Royal Hotel) before the parade with face painting taking place there. After the parade Music Generation will move to St Joseph's Hall where they have a number of different bands, groups, playing a variety of music from rock to traditional Irish music. A Night with the Miners reunion event will take place in the Kilronan Castle Hotel on March 6th. Tickets are currently on sale locally. On the night several former miners and some very special guests will be sharing their experiences of coal mining in Arigna. It’s a night of songs, stories, and memories not to be missed.
The next meeting of Drumboylan ICA will be held in Drumboylan Hall on Wednesday, March 6th at 8.30 p.m.. Guest speaker will be a textile artist. Classes on mindfulness, health and nutrition. Sewing machine classes will be starting soon. For further details contact 086 8069613.

Cootehall Village Enhancement Association is seeking eligible candidates under the Rural Social Scheme (RSS). RSS employees are employed for 19.5 hours per week to provide certain services of benefit to rural communities. Keep Saturday, March 30th free to attend a fundraiser in Henry’s Bar, Cootehall. It’s to raise funds for the Cootehall Enhancement Group, a newly established group aiming to improve the appearance and amenities of the village. The group is hoping to apply for grants towards planting and upgrading around the village but very often these grants are conditional on the local group matching the grant amount otherwise the offer is withdrawn. Hence the need to fundraise.
Patricia, Agnes and Anne invite the Active Age Community to join them for a chat and a cuppa on Thursday mornings at 11 a.m. in the McGahern Barracks, Cootehall. Looking forward to seeing you all.
The Local Link bus comes through Cootehall at 9.27 a.m., Knockvicar at 9.51 a.m. and arrives in Boyle at 10.13 a.m. every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and the return journey leaves Boyle at 1 p.m. getting back to Knockvicar at 1.22 p.m. and Cootehall at 1.58 p.m.. There are also request stops along the route.
Well done to Fiachra Henry who played for Abbvie Sligo in the All-Ireland Inter firm’s semi-final in Limerick on Saturday last.
Well done to girls U-13, boys U-13 and boys U-10 Community Games indoor soccer reams who participated in the competition over the weekend. The girls and boys U-13 were unfortunate not to qualify for the semi-finals. The boys U-10 had a good win over Kiltoom in the quarter final and played a very strong Strokestown team in the semi-final and were unlucky not to qualify for the final. Thanks very much to all the coaches - Charlene Morahan, Mark Reilly, Niall Fallon, Peter Clinton, and Peter O' Hagan.
A huge thank you to all the children and their adults who travelled to and participated in Scor on Friday evening in Elphin. The ballad groups finished in second and third place out of 11 entries. A big thank you to the mentors of the participants, ballad, solo, quiz and novelty.
