Local Notes: Show Times in Elphin, Windmill, Fresh Organic Vegetables
Elphin’s U-15 girls’ and U-13 boys’ rounders teams who brought home bronze medals from the Community Games national finals.
The 47th Elphin Agricultural Show is the result of months of dedicated work by the committee and volunteers.
The show, which takes place on Saturday, August 29th on the mart grounds, provides an opportunity for the community to showcase all that is good about farming and rural life. This was acknowledged at the recent launch night when representatives from the Hereford, Charolais, Angus, Shorthorn and Limousin Breed Societies attended and spoke very highly of the show's outstanding all-weather facilities.
Several representatives remarked that the torrential rain experienced on Show Day 2025 had no impact on exhibitors, highlighting the quality of the venue and its infrastructure. The breed societies also praised the exceptional standard of cattle exhibited at Elphin Show, noting that the event continues to attract some of the finest livestock from across the region. Their positive feedback further reinforces Elphin Show's reputation as one of the country's leading agricultural shows.
Although much of the focus may be on the highly regarded cattle section a number of other categories have proven hugely popular with entrants including the horse, sheep, poultry and home produce sections.

Elphin CCÉ and Elphin Set Dancers held a special homecoming celebration on Sunday last for everyone who represented Elphin so brilliantly at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2026 in Belfast. From fantastic performances and wonderful memories to All-Ireland medals and achievements both on and off the competition stage, there was plenty for Elphin to be proud of. The celebration was for everyone who was part of the Belfast adventure — competitors, musicians, singers, storytellers, dancers, tutors, mentors, families and supporters.
Elphin CCÉ music classes and membership registration for 2026/2027 will take place next month. Whether you're returning for another year or thinking about joining for the first time, the group would love to welcome you to Elphin CCÉ. The 2026/27 programme includes classes in tin whistle, fiddle, concertina, flute, singing and dancing, with options for beginners, intermediate and more advanced learners. New members are always welcome — young and not-so-young!
The death occurred on August 21st, peacefully, at home with her loving family by her side, of Mrs Mary Savage (née Noone) Karol Avenue, Elphin and formerly of Northbrook Road, Solihull, West Midlands, England. Mary will be very sadly missed by her son, Michael; daughters, Lorraine and Sarah; cherished grandchildren, Brook, Sadie, Abhainn, Hiede and Esme; sisters Kathleen, Teresa and Margaret; brothers, Hugh and Padraig; extended family, relatives, neighbours and friends. Following Mass of the Resurrection on Monday in St. Patrick’s Church, Elphin Mary was laid to rest in Caldra Cemetery (via Shankill).

The next singers' night in the Tower Inn will be on August 30th. All singers are welcome to attend as all genre of singing is catered for. The night always provides enjoyable entertainment, so come along and bring a friend.

Cavetown Residents CE Scheme has vacancies for environmental workers in several locations under the Croghan based scheme, including an administrative assistant preferably with agricultural experience, and for a café worker preferably with experience but all necessary training will be provided. The Living Well Programme helps people living with a long-term health condition to manage their health and improve their overall wellbeing. A new programme will start in Boyle on Wednesday, September 9th from 2.30 p.m. to 5 p.m., continuing at that time for six weeks. Places are free (HSE funded) but advance registration is required. Croghan organic garden pop-up shop opens every Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. beside the Old Creamery Café. Fresh produce grown locally at the organic community gardens.
Bingo takes place in the Patrician Hall, Cortober on Sundays at 8 p.m.. Big cash prizes to be won. All welcome.
Shannon Gaels Intermediate team will play St. Michael's in Round 3 of the Roscommon GAA Intermediate championship on Saturday, August 29th at Ardcarne Park at 5 p.m..
