There was good news at the weekend for Community Games participants at the national competitions. Mixed U-16 solo recitation second place, silver medal, Henry Gunn, Elphin; U-13 Group Drama / comedy came third with bronze medals; U-16 Group Drama - Comedy came 2nd with silver medals. Congratulations to all.
Elphin Community Arts Group is ready to present its plan for this year's show. A meeting will take place on this Friday, September 11th at 8.30 p.m. in Elphin Community Centre.. Anyone who would like to participate front of house, on stage or back stage is more than welcome. Over 18s only.
Elphin CCÉ music classes and a membership registration event for 2026/2027 will take place shortly. Whether you're returning for another year or thinking about joining for the first time, the group would love to welcome you. The 2026/27 programme includes classes in tin whistle, fiddle, concertina, flute, singing and dancing, with options for beginners, intermediate and more advanced learners. Full registration and class details coming soon. Keep an eye on the social media page over the coming weeks for the date, time, and venue for registration. New members are always welcome — young and not-so-young.
Elphin GAA is looking for seat sponsors. For a contribution of €150 your family name or that of a loved one will be prominently displayed on a seat in the club’s new stand. After a very enjoyable summer season of trad sessions all associated with the Tuesday (8.30 p.m.) night music sessions in the Tower Inn are looking forward to the longer nights and the greater sense of togetherness that goes with the long nights of trad music sessions. All are also looking forward to meeting new and old friends. Whether young or old, be they musician or listener all will be made very welcome with a great night assured for all.
The next in the series of singers’ nights in the Tower Inn will take place on Sunday, September 27th at 8.30 p.m.. All singers and genre of singing will be catered for. These singers’ nights have proved to be very enjoyable over the years and all singers and listeners will be welcome and experience a wonderful night, so come along and join in.
Tidy Towns will resume Saturday meetings at the polytunnel shortly. All welcome. Thanks also to everyone who sponsors the work of the group. The group would love to have some new volunteers. If you are new to Elphin it is a great way to meet people. Volunteers can do as much or as little as they like. Volunteers do an hour on Saturday and during the summer are out and about during the week.

Best wishes to Adam Meghan, Croghan, who will represent Ireland at the World Junior Muay Championships to be held in Greece from November 6th to 16th. Adam trains with Carrick-on-Shannon Muay Thai Club and his achievements to date include a European amateur title in 2024 and his recent Irish title. The death occurred on Wednesday, August 26th, at Roscommon Hospice, of Mr Byron (Ron) Hooper, Cortober, Carrick-on-Shannon and formerly of Stoke-on-Trent, UK. Pre-deceased by his parents Byron and Dorris (Peggy) Hooper (Bristol), Ron will be sadly missed by his wife, Joan; children, Darren (Switzerland), Louise (UK), Claire (Sligo); son-in-law, Craig and daughter-in-law Claudia; grandchildren, sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews, friends and neighbours. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Monday, August 31st in St. Mary's Church, Carrick-on-Shannon, followed by interment in St. Mary's cemetery, Carrick-on-Shannon.

Croghan Book Club meets on the second Tuesday of every month from 8.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. in the Old Creamery Café, Croghan.

Recent winner of the Shannon Gaels GAA Club's 50/50 draw was Vinny Heydon (Luton) who won €1,780. All support for the draw is much appreciated. Tickets may be purchased on ClubSpot or at local businesses.
All interested in taking part in the Croghan Variety Show 2026, are invited to attend an Open Night in the Old Creamery, Croghan on Friday, September 11th at 8 p.m.. There's something for everyone, including singing, performing, front of house, set-up and behind the scenes. No experience necessary, come on your own, bring a friend, bring a group and find your place in the Croghan Variety Show.
Cavetown Residents CE Scheme has vacancies for environmental workers in several locations under the Croghan based scheme, including an administrative assistant preferably with agricultural experience, and for a café worker preferably with experience but all necessary training will be provided. Carrick-on-Shannon & District Historical Society is pleased to present popular Leitrim native Msgr. Liam Kelly with his illustrated talk on myths and folklore associated with 'the Iron Mountain'. The talk is drawn from his 2025 book, Sliabh an Iarainn - History, Myth and Folklore, and will be held in St George's Heritage & Visitor Centre (Church Lane, N41 KP62) on Wednesday, September 16th at 8 p.m..
