Cost of Sacred Heart project increases by €10m

The Sacred Heart Hospital, Roscommon
The cost of the new 50 bed unit at the Sacred Heart Hospital has increased again, rising by more than €10 million in one year. The new build is needed to comply with Hiqa regulations.
The tender, which was published last April, for the new unit and refurbishment works revealed that the estimated costs of the project, excluding VAT, was €24 million.
It marked a near trebling of costs for the work as the original estimates for the delivery of the project back in 2016 were in the region of €9 million. However, the project's budget has now jumped by over €10 million.
When contacted by the Herald, the HSE said: “HSE Community Healthcare West can confirm that the overall project budget funding approved for the Sacred Heart Hospital Roscommon is €35million”.
“Funding has been approved for the Sacred Heart Hospital Roscommon by the HSE Board and a preferred bidder has been identified for the project,” the spokesperson said. “The HSE Estates Team is in liaison with this preferred bidder to finalise pre-contract documentation and this is expected to be finalised in the coming weeks.” The successful contractor will build the new 50 bed community nursing unit as well as carry out other works at the Roscommon Town healthcare facility. As part of this they will also oversee the demolition of the Our Lady’s and St Joseph’s wards, described by the HSE as outdated.
