Roscommon-Galway Independent TD Denis Naughten, who announced last year that he would not be running again for the Dáil, has endorsed his brother John’s bid to win a seat for Fine Gael in the next General Election.
Cllr John Naughten confirmed this morning that he will seek the party nomination to run in the forthcoming General Election in the Roscommon-Galway constituency.
In a message of support on social media, Deputy Denis Naughten said that his brother’s decision to seek to contest the next General Election is about building on the work he’s been doing for more than 20 years on Roscommon County Council.
“I know what has always driven him, and will continue to drive him, is his desire to make Roscommon and East Galway an attractive place to live and work through the creation of jobs improvement of services, and building of vital infrastructure.
“Anyone who has met John in his role as a councillor knows how dedicated and committed he is to help every person that he meets.
“John is an extremely capable and competent politician, and I truly believe he would make an excellent TD for the people of the Roscommon-Galway constituency,” said Deputy Naughten.
The Fine Gael convention for the Roscommon-Galway constituency, which will be held in the Abbey Hotel, Roscommon Town, on September 20th at 7.30 p.m., is set to be a contested one.
FG Senator Aisling Dolan, who ran as a General Election candidate in 2020, has already indicated she will be seeking the nomination, as has 2024 Local Election candidate, Dympna Daly-Finn from Arigna.
There is also speculation that chairperson of Roscommon GAA, Brian Carroll could also be putting his hat into the ring.
