Local Notes: Cavetown fun run, Health is Wealth and Seamus O'Rourke to perform 'Indigestion'

Elphin Set Dancers had a great day at Roscommon Fleadh including a rare opportunity to get a photo of the club. Congratulations to all competitors, next stop Connacht Fleadh 2025, Ballinasloe.

COMMUNITY ARTS & DRAMA SOCIETY PRESENT VARIETY SHOW 

The Community Arts and Drama Society will present its much anticipated variety show in Elphin Community Centre on May 17th at 8 p.m. sharp. It promises to be a wonderful evening's entertainment showcasing the immense talent that is in the town and surrounding areas. Tickets are on sale in Glancy’s, Eternal Emporium, Elphin Pharmacy and Morris Meats. Looking forward to seeing as many as possible on the night. Admission to the show is strictly ticket only and tickets must be purchased prior to the show.

TOWER BAR SESSIONS 

The Tuesday night traditional music sessions in the Tower Inn, Elphin continue to provide a great night’s entertainment and visiting musicians or followers will be made very welcome any Tuesday after 8 p.m. so come along and bring a friend. The next singers’ night in the Tower Inn will be on Sunday, May 4th (the Bank Holiday weekend) starting at 8.30 p.m. All singers and listeners will be made very welcome.

ELPHIN COMHALTAS 

It was a fantastic weekend in Athlone at the Roscommon County Fleadh Cheoil. Huge thanks to Comhaltas Áth Luain for hosting such a great event . A big congratulations to everyone who took part, and a special shoutout to the talented Elphin CCÉ members. The group is proud of all for sharing amazing music, singing, dancing, and storytelling throughout the weekend. Wishing the very best of luck to those who have got through and will be representing Elphin and Roscommon in the Connacht Fleadh. All roads lead to Ballinasloe in July for the Connacht Fleadh Cheoil.

FUN RUN 

A 12k run and 6k run and walk in aid of Cavetown Amenity Centre repair will take place on May 5th from the amenity centre. Entry €10, family €20. Raffle and spot prizes on the day, refreshments after. Sauna on site at Cavetown Lake, book beforehand on 085 1841067.

LINE DANCING 

Line dancing with Shannon takes place in An Bothar Rua every Wednesday at 8 p.m. It’s great fun and everyone is welcome.

WINDMILL NEEDS MAJOR REPAIRS 

 Elphin windmill, the oldest operational windmill in Ireland, was substantially damaged during storm Èowyn and needs major repairs. A historically and culturally significant site in the agricultural life of Ireland, Elphin Windmill needs your support in raising funds to get the repairs done and reopened for the public as soon as possible. Abbeycartron NS is running a cash for clobber fundraiser. Recycle your unwanted clothing and help raise funds for the school. Drop off location is Abbeycartron NS gates, only on the following dates - May 1st and 2nd, 9.20 a.m. 2.10 p.m. and 3.10 p.m.; Saturday, May 3rd, 10 a.m..

HEALTH IS WEALTH EVENT 

Leitrim's Health is Wealth event takes places in the Landmark Hotel, Carrick-on-Shannon on Saturday, May 3rd at 8 p.m.. The event features a live podcast, music and conversations to raise awareness about mental health. The "Where is My Mind" podcast, founded and hosted by musician Niall Breslin (Bressie) explores how people can better look after themselves in the modern world. Other speakers on the night include singer/songwriter Charlie McGettigan and Dr. Catherine Dolan, Consultant Psychiatrist.

SEAMUS O'ROURKE AT LANDMARK HOTEL 

Well-known writer and performer Seamus O'Rourke will present his show "Indigestion" at the Landmark Hotel, Carrick-on-Shannon, on Saturday, May 17th at 8 p.m. in association with Shannon Gaels GAA Club. Tickets €20 available from Landmark Hotel, club members or through Shannon Gaels app. Tickets purchased through the app can be collected on the night.

CARRICK-ON-SHANNON & DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY 

The regular monthly meeting of the Carrick-on-Shannon Historical Society will be held on Wednesday, May 7th at 8 p.m. in St George's Heritage & Visitor Centre (Church Lane). All welcome to attend. Many interesting events are upcoming, including historian/author Paul Connolly discussing 'The Lost Country Houses of County Roscommon' on Wednesday, May 21st, plus several historical/heritage events that are part of The Leitrim Gathering during the weekend of May 23rd-25th.
