An American sport called basketball was introduced into Ireland by members of the Irish Army in 1923. Like all other sports in the army there was and is today an All-Army Basketball Championship. There was also an all LDF (Local Defence Force) Championship. Castlerea LDF won this All-Ireland Championship in 1946. During those years they used to train in the old market house, now Kearney’s Pharmacy on The Square. The Castlerea team included Larry Cummins, Paddy Vaughan, Paddy Duignan, Paddy Forde, Philip Gannon, Wattie Keane, Mattie Connolly, Danny Carroll, Richard Gannon. The greatest achievement by a Roscommon team in any sport was achieved by the girls of the Convent of Mercy School, Castlerea, when they won the Secondary Schools Cadet Championship of Ireland and went on to win the Girls European Championship in 1976. Most of the girls were from the Ballintubber area. The team was Brid O’Brien, Teresa Shanagher (captain), Katie Collins, Sheila Conama, Marian Collins, Brid Conama, Anne Marie Collins, Deirdre Collins, Mairead Bradley, Finola O’Brien.
