On Wednesday evening last, there was a spectacular view in the Williamstown area of the solar eclipse. The cloud cover parted at the most opportune time, and, using eye protecting material, it was possible to see this rare, unforgettable phenomenon in great detail.

SPORTING SUCCESSES

With the inter county season now over in the respective codes, it was great to see how well national representatives did in both the European Athletic Championships in Birmingham and the European Aquatic Championships in Paris. The significant haul of medals won by performers at both venues is a source of great pride for all, and shows that we are more than capable of holding our own on the European and, indeed, on the World stage. Well done to all.

HERITAGE WEEK EVENT

To coincide with National Heritage, the Rathcroghan Visitor Centre in Tulsk will host a storytelling event to coincide with the launch of Finnbennach Bull Sculpture on this Thursday, August 20th from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the centre. This original sculpture, funded through Roscommon LEADER Partnership, was made by local Longford artist, Liam Kavanagh and will serve as a landmark sculpture for Tulsk and County Roscommon more generally. It will celebrate the early Irish stories which inspired its creation, as well as the countless generations of farming communities who have farmed amongst the monuments of Rathcroghan, the ancient capital of Connacht. The bull, made of stainless steel, represents the monstrous Finnbennach, the White Bull of Connacht, who was the property of Ailill Mac Máta, the husband of the Warrior Queen Medb (Maeve) of Connacht, whose home is at Rathcroghan. It is from here that she assembles the armies of Ireland to go across to Cooley, County Louth, in order to kidnap the only equal to the Finnbennach on the island, the Donn Cuailnge, the Brown Bull of Cooley. Residents are warmly invited to celebrate the launch of this unique landmark, hear the origin story of the two bulls, how they caused war across Iron Age Ireland and how they met their ultimate end.

CHURCH GATE COLLECTION

The organisers of last weekend’s church gate collection in aid of Roscommon SPCA would like to thank members of the community who supported the collection at Killina Church, last Saturday. The support of the local community is greatly appreciated.

At halftime, the score was Tulsk 4-3, Castlerea 5-6. Tulsk were a different outfit in the second half, and eventually delivered a crucial final goal. The final score was Tulsk 8-9 Castlerea 6-11.
