LATE MR JOHN J. COX

The death took place recently at Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe, of Mr John Joe Cox of Bridge Street, Strokestown. He was a highly regarded resident of the town for many years. A native of Ballyhubert, Scramogue, he was son of the late Mr Paddy Cox and of the late Mrs Mary Jane Cox (nee Fallon). Following his schooldays, he joined the staff of the Westward Garage, Strokestown, as an apprentice mechanic. He later transferred to the parts department of Westward Scania and was responsible for deliveries of parts to the four corners of the country. He was always concerned at the future of Strokestown and was one of the group that established Strokestown Community Development Association in 1991, becoming its first chair and a role that he occupied for many years. He was one of the organisers of the annual summer festival and town improvement schemes with Roscommon County Council. His fundraising skills were prodigious and he established the weekly lotto draw and spearheaded other avenues of funding in aid of the development of the town and district. He was also a well-known golfer, starting with membership of Boyle Golf Club. He was later one of the group who acquired land at Bumlin, Strokestown, which was developed into the 9 hole golf course of the then fledgling Strokestown Golf Club. He served in all officerships of the club over the years. The club paid a special tribute as the funeral cortege passed through the golf course grounds with a guard of honour of club members and representatives of other clubs. He was a noted card player and attended card drives far and wide. Of an outgoing and jovial disposition, he made many firm friends in all walks of life during his lifetime. News of his passing following a period of ill-heath was heard of with deep sadness among his relatives, neighbours and his wide circle of friends. He was predeceased by his brother, Patsy (Scramogue) and by his grandchild, baby Ryann Callaghan (Crossmolina). The Funeral Mass was concelebrated at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Strokestown, by Fr. Eamonn O'Connor, P.P., Fr. Vincent Atueyi and Canon Ciaran Whitney (Strokestown) and the interment followed in Scramogue Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Margaret (nee Egan); children, Caroline (Alf), Michelle (Danny), Sean (Michelle), Geraldine (Mervyn), Teresa (Enda) and Patrick (Doreen); grandchildren, Emmett, Thomas Luke, Cian, Katie, Eilish, Jamie, Killian, Megan, Sophie, Abi, Dylan, Charlie, Jack and Adam; brothers, Mickey and Seamus (Scramogue); sisters, Mrs Mary-Ann Heavey (Clooncraff), Mrs Chris Collins (Fourmilehouse) and Mrs Helen Cosgrove (Farnbeg), brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and other relatives to whom deepest sympathy is extended.

There will be no Weekday Masses in the parish from Monday, June, to Thursday, June 4th inclusive.

LOUGH DERG PILGRIMAGE 

The Achonry and Elphin three day pilgrimage to Lough Derg will take place from Friday, June 12th to Sunday, June14th. More details including bus options at www,elphindiocese.ie/lough-derg. All welcome.

LOURDES PILGRIMAGE 

The Achonry and Elphin Diocesan pilgrimage to Lourdes will take place from August 28th to September 2nd inclusive. Those who travel as part of the assisted pilgrim section will stay in Accueil Notre Dame, which is situated near the grotto and sanctuary are. They will be cared for by the diocesan pilgrimage care team while in Lourdes. Application forms and full details are available from Very Rev. HOSPICE 

An exhibition of paintings by Lily Walshe in aid of Roscommon Hospice and the palliative care team will be held at Creeve Community Centre (F45 HD89) on June 13th and 14th, opening on Saturday, June 13th June, at 7.30 p.m., All sale proceeds will be in aid of the Hospice. Please support this worthy cause.

LATE MRS EILEEN PONSONBY 

The death took place at Heartland Hospital, Birmingham, UK, of Mrs Eileen Ponsonby (nee Murray), wife of the late Mr Denis Ponsonby. A native of Strokestown, she was the last surviving member of the family of the late Mr Michael Murray and of the late Mrs Lena Murray (nee Egan), Dunmurraghoe. She was a frequent visitor to her native area over the years. News of her passing aged 101 years was heard of with deep regret among her relatives, former neighbours and friends. She was predeceased by her son, Des. The Requiem Mass was celebrated at the Church of Our Lady of the Wayside, Strafford Road, Shirley, Soliull, Birmingham. Deepest sympathy is extended to her family and relatives on their bereavement.

KILGLASS GAELS LOTTO 

In the Kilglass Gaels Lotto held on May 30th the numbers drawn were 13, 15, 16, 17, bonus number, 20. There was no jackpot winner, There were two Match 3 number winners of €100 each, Lorna Magan, Noreen Corcoran. Next jackpot is €10,800 for four correct numbers, €14,800 for four correct numbers plus bonus number. Next draw takes place in the clubrooms on Saturday, June 6th.

LATE MR GERRY JORDAN 

The death has occurred of Mr Gerry Jordan Legan, Kilglass. He will be sadly missed by his wife, Margaret; children Geraldine and her husband Dave, Padraic and his partner Bernadette, Soifra and her partner Shane; grandchildren, Oliver and Freddy; brothers and sisters, Richard, Brendan, Rose, Padraic and Catherine; nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins, relatives, neighbours and friends. May he rest in peace.

RSPCA COLLECTION 

The Roscommon Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will hold a church gate collection at St. Anne’s Church, Scramogue on Sunday, June 7th. Roscommon SPCA is run by a team of dedicated volunteers with all money donated going directly towards animal welfare in the county.

A meeting of Croghan Parish Pastoral Council will take place in Drumlion Parochial House on Tuesday, June 9th at 7.30 p.m..

LATE MR PAT BEIRNE 

The death occurred on Tuesday, April 21st, of Mr Pat (Patrick) Beirne, Loughrea, County Galway. A native of Lugnashammer, Croghan, he was predeceased by his wife, Betty and siblings, Aileen, Sean and Frank. Pat will be sadly missed by his family, Karen, Graham and SallyAnn, sons-in-law, daughter-in-law, grandchildren, brother Joe, sisters-in-law, extended family, neighbours and friends. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday, April 24th in St. Brendan's Cathedral, Loughrea followed by interment in Mount Pleasant cemetery, Loughrea.

SHANNON GAELS 50/50 DRAW 

Recent winner of the Shannon Gaels GAA Club's 50/50 draw was Michael Kelly who won €1,800. All support for the draw is much appreciated. Tickets may be purchased on ClubSpot or at local businesses.

Croghan Organic Garden Pop-Up Shop is open every Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. beside the Old Creamery Café. Fresh produce grown locally at the organic community gardens.

SHOOTING STARS NURSERY
