24/7 garda presence sought to tackle anti-social behaviour
Independent councillor Michéal Frain is concerned about incidents of anti-social behaviour in Ballaghaderreen.
A local councillor has called for Ballaghaderreen Garda Station to be staffed on a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week basis in response to growing concerns about anti-social behaviour in the town.
Independent councillor Michéal Frain said he had received a significant number of complaints from concerned residents in recent weeks regarding anti-social behaviour.
He outlined that elderly people and other pedestrians are being forced off footpaths by groups of youths congregating and refusing to let them pass. "This is simply not acceptable," he said.
Residents have also reported scooters and bicycles speeding on local streets, while concerns have been raised about individuals travelling through back lanes late at night with loud music, disturbing nearby households and creating an atmosphere of intimidation.
"Everyone deserves to feel safe in their own town,” said the councillor.
Along with his call for Ballaghaderreen Garda Station to be staffed 24/7, Cllr Frain is also seeking increased garda visibility in the town, including the introduction of regular foot patrols.
He stressed his message is directed only at a small minority whose actions are causing distress to others.
"The vast majority of young people in Ballaghaderreen are respectful and make a positive contribution to our community,” said Cllr Frain.
