Minister Heather Humphreys announcing outdoor recreation funding.

Two projects in County Roscommon have been awarded almost €700,000 under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme.

At Donamon, a half a million euro was awarded to the Donamon Outdoor Recreation Area. The funding will be used for the development of visitor orientation point, upgrading the existing trails within Bracklin forest, and improving quality and accessibility of the area.

In Boyle, €199,100 was awarded for the enhancement of riverside trail along the Boyle River. This project aims to enhance the current riverside trail along the Boyle River, known locally as the Lawns, Boyle, to provide a more accessible and attractive recreational amenity.

Fine Gael Senator, Aisling Dolan welcomed the funding, calling it a significant investment.

“I’d like to thank my colleague Minister Heather Humphreys for funding of €700,000 for two major outdoor projects under the Department of Rural & Community Development,” Senator Dolan said.

She added that more than €60 million from the Department of Rural & Community Development had been invested in the county over the past 5 years.

“The Donamon Outdoor Recreation project has won funding of half a million under Measure 3 for large scale projects,” Senator Dolan continued. “Tracks and trails in Bracklin forest at Donamon will be improved and all adding to the Suck Valley Way Trail.

“Well done to the Rural Recreation team at Roscommon County Council together with the Suck Valley Way committee on advocating and improving this scenic walk and hike which is part of the national Beara Breifne Trail. Thanks also to Gareth Scahill for always highlighting tracks and trails as well. This summer could be the perfect time for families to explore the Suck Valley Way in easy sections and discover adventure right on our doorstep” She congratulated Boyle Town Team on the Lawn project to restore the walkway along the Boyle river.

“This investment of close to €200,000 will make a real impact for everyone in the town. It will add to the Latin quarter buzz in the area with lively cafes and restaurants and the recently renovated library space,” the Senator said. “My colleague Dympna Daly-Finn is a fantastic advocate for the Boyle area. And I know so many travel near and far for the Boyle Arts Festival which is starting off from July 18th and lots of great acts & performers planned.”

In Galway, the Glinsk Heritage Park was awarded €200,000. The money will be used for the repair and upgrade of 2kms of existing trails to improve accessibility.
